Places, not posts
Social travel apps optimise for sharing. Earth 91 optimises for finding your own notes again. A place is a pin on the map with a title, plain-text notes, and optional media. It is private on your device unless you export it.
Long-press the map to create a place at that location. Open it from the Places tab or tap the marker when it is in view. Notes autosave locally. You can delete a place or individual attachments when you no longer need them.
Pin kinds for camp and track work
Earth 91 supports pin kinds so you can filter the map later:
- Pin for general field notes
- Campsite for overnight spots you might return to
- Obstacle for logs, washouts, or tight sections
- Blockage for closed tracks or access issues
Filter controls on the map let you show only the kinds you care about on a busy weekend in familiar country.
Photos, video, and voice
Attach photos or videos you choose from the library or capture in the field. Record voice notes when typing is awkward with gloves on or when you want the sound of a creek crossing after rain.
Media files stay in the app sandbox with checksums for integrity. They are not uploaded to Earth 91 servers in the current release. Export places as GeoJSON or include them in a local backup when you want copies elsewhere.
Camping workflow examples
Weekend free camp: Drop a campsite pin when you find a level spot. Add a photo of the fire pit and a note about north-facing shade. Next year, search Places or pan the map offline to the marker.
Convoy day: Mark an obstacle pin where the group turned around. Attach a short video so the tail vehicle knows what to expect on the return leg.
Seasonal closure: Use a blockage pin at the gate with the date you visited and what the sign said. Pair it with a GPS track of the alternate route you took.
List, gallery, and delete flows
The Places tab lists your pins with pagination for long histories. Place detail shows a media gallery with full-screen photos, inline video, and audio controls. Deletes ask for confirmation so a pocket press does not wipe a trip.
What Earth 91 does not do for campers
Earth 91 does not list official campground bookings, show live availability, or crowdsource campsite ratings. It does not replace park regulations or permission from Traditional Owners. Use it as your private field notebook layered on offline maps.
Quick answer: Can I keep camping notes offline?
Yes. Place titles, notes, and attachments are stored on the device and work without mobile data once the app and map pack are installed.
